“We were amazed at the overwhelming response from galleries worldwide,” said co-founder Agatha Wara. “It was time for a fair like this to happen.” At least 5,000 visitors are expected.

Along with the fair, 101 Tokyo has organized a lecture series on investing in contemporary art, an art/video exhibition in collaboration with Art Lounge, and an art performance by the famed Beijing-based Gao Brothers. In a tie-up with Sony Digital, visitors will be able to vote for their favorite artist online by mobile phone. The winner will receive the Bacon Prize, Tokyo’s first international contemporary art award.
“Art Basel has an online voting system, but not with mobile phones,” said co-founder Julia Barnes. “It’s a first worldwide.”
