Call for Entry: 101TOKYO Contemporary Art Fair 2009

101TOKYO 2009 Application guideline and application is available at www.101tokyo.com/en/entry2009

We are excited to announce that 101TOKYO is opening up its application process for 2009. Once again 101TOKYO will coincide with Tokyo Art Week, April 2 -5. (A VIP preview and opening will be held on April 1.)

Building on the success of last year’s fair, which had sales of more than $1 million from only 28 galleries, 101TOKYO is aiming to become the first place for collectors to find new, contemporary art in Asia Pacific and is planning to expand to other locations in the region. The fair will continue to select the very best in up-and-coming and emerging galleries to create well-curated exhibitions by risk-taking artists who are practicing their craft today.

“During and after the fair a number of gallerists not participating in 101TOKYO expressed interest in joining in 2009 after seeing the platform that 101 created for exposing contemporary art in Japan,” says 101TOKYO producer Julia Barnes. “We look forward to expanding on what we have achieved last year with new services and innovative ways of reaching collectors.”

Broad media coverage from last year has meant that the knowledge of the fair and its unique nature in Japan has reached a captive art-buying audience in Japan, China and Taiwan. 101TOKYO intends to challenge collector’s expectations and push the boundaries of what a traditional art fair is by exploring new ways of displaying, marketing and selling contemporary art. In 2009, 101Tokyo will offer our exhibitors a concierge service that will make readily available Japanese gallery assistants, translators and interpreters fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese.

101TOKYO is currently deciding on the venue for 2009 and will inform applicants as soon as the location is confirmed. At that time definitive booth sizes and fees will be released. Please see the application form for further information.

Headlines and quotations from galleries and media post 101TOKYO, 2008:

“With only 28 exhibitors, 101TOKYO was as successful as Art Fair Tokyo.”
Satoru Nagoya, Art Journalist. Things to think after “festival”
BT vol.60 No. 908 June 2008

“We sold very well at the fair and made a pretty significant profit for a young gallery,”
Jeffrey Rosen from Misako and Rosen Gallery in Frieze.com, April 24, 2008

“Japanese artists were not the only ones who attracted attention at the Tokyo fairs. At 101TOKYO, larger works by Indian artists Baiju Parthan and T.V. Santhosh, costing $70,000 to $100,000, sold almost immediately, reflecting feverish demand for art from the sub-continent.”
Reuters, Apr 3, 2008

“By all reports, for those galleries that did make the trip with art to sell, it was well worth their time. The majority of overseas exhibitors at the new international 101TOKYO Contemporary Art Fair joined many Japanese counterparts in selling out their artists’ works.”
Japan Times, April 10, 2008
